“After making such a spontaneous decision, she found her first job in San Francisco.”

Talia: This is a story about my mom's life after college. Her name is Stephanie and she is forty-eight years old. She attended college at University California Santa Barbara. At the time, she worked at a local grocery store, which helped her get through college. She struggled to decide what her major would be, where her future career would take place, and what her future career would look like. Can you tell us what you ended up majoring in?

Mom: Yes. I was a pharmacology major, but I switched to communications and really loved my major.

Talia: After graduating, where did you move?

Mom: I moved to San Francisco. But, my natural choice would've been Los Angeles. I just felt that there may be more job opportunities in San Francisco and I wanted to go for a challenge.

Talia: After making such a spontaneous decision, she found her first job in San Francisco. Can you tell us a little bit about your job?

Mom: So my first real job after college, I decided to kind of scrap my communications major. And San Francisco was the hotbed of technology, so I got a job in technical support working for a large technology firm.

Talia: After about ten years, my mom decided to make her final change in her career. What career path did you end up choosing?

Mom: I chose nursing, and I'm so glad that I did.

Talia: My mom is now working as a nurse practitioner and has been in the industry for over ten years. Looking back, are you happy with your career choice and do you think San Francisco was a suitable place to move?

Mom: Yes, absolutely.
