βIt was already hard enough to find a residence that were available, but also were affordable for them in the city of San Francisco.β
At the year of 1989, my grandma immigrated to the U.S. all the way from China with my grandpa, and they were in the long and difficult process of settling down. At first, they lived in an apartment rented from a relative in another state. It was already hard enough to find a residence that were available, but also were affordable for them in the city of San Francisco. But, apart from that, they still had to make a living. My grandma was especially worried about it. As a non-English speaker, and also at the age of fifty-five, the job opportunities were already quite limited for my grandma. She needed to find a stable job immediately to pay off the rent and put food on the table, since my grandparents really had no one to rely on at that time in San Francisco.
